Unlike HIMSS AsiaPac 08 that attended last week, AMIA Spring Congress is really like its name, a congress about American Medical Informatics consists of 4 tracks : Clinical Research Informatics (CRI), Electronic Health Records (EHR), Personal Health Records (PHR) and Public Health Informatics (PHI) (see attached file for full programs) while HIMSS pays much attention on education sessions, AMIA Spring Congress spreads its notion on keynotes, panel discussion and presentations which are mostly US-related subjects ( Definitely !! it's AMIA not IMIA or APAMI ). This makes me understand a better pictures of how the US are trying to shaping and paving the way for nationwide medical informatics agenda.

Before I will go through every tracks that I've attended I would like to tell you my delight in this trip, not only I've met my first teacher in medical informatics -- Dr. Bill Hersh -- I also met my first medical informatics textbook author --Dr. Edward Shortliffe -- the former I found him by schedule since he is my instructor for the AMIA 10x10 Course which i was waiting with excitement to participate and I did !! , and the latter I found him by chance. He had moved from Columbia University to University of Arizona which i visited in BioMedical Campus Tour before the congress began.

Firstly, I'd like to start with EHR track which is the most interesting topic for me, first session devoted to EHR and quality management and second session is open source EHR. In the first session, speaker pointed out that although EHR adoption continues to increase, availability and use of EHR functions lagging behind (e.g. E-prescribing moving faster but without decision support system). Many physicians report that EHR creates new opportunities for errors but what are these errors so further study needed to clarify/comfirm preventive effect of EHR.
In the second session, speakers discussed about openMRS project which is open source EHR but not HIS (hospital Information System) which is helping a lot of AIDs patients & hospitals in Africa. Personally, I think we are better than those countries in term of technology and infrastructure but we still lack of interest in integration of fragmented data from public hospital across the countries to help ministry of public health or related department manage and manipulate all information effectively.

The second day of the conference, I started with Clinical Informatics Certification which is very interesting, AMIA initiated this sub-specialties program to support need of informaticians in a;; knowledge domain. However it may take a year or more to start this program publicly and many years to spread the words to other disciplines such as nurses, dentists or pharmacists.

The next seesion is about experience in CPOE and CDS (Decision Support System)
The afternoon session is in clinical research informatics track, the speakers describe how they could harmonize different systems interoperate together but they didn't give me enough examples since I'm very new in this field.
I wish I heard more about how they harmonized existing system too, may be next year.
